“Body image refers to the subjective perception we have of our physical selves and the subjective and judgmental way we think others perceive us and how we see them”
Body image is not just what we think of ourselves, but how we think others see us.
How we see, feel and believe about ourselves will reflect in every area of our lives; our happiness, wellbeing, relationships and our paths to success.
More and more people are suffering today with mental health challenges. Body Image Dissatisfaction, also known as BID is like a strong silent virus slowly destroying our mental and physical health.
The effects of having these destructive, negative and flawed thoughts, feelings and beliefs of our bodies can lead to; extreme dieting, restriction, macro imbalances, obsessive behaviours, mental challenges such as; anxiety, depression, poor concentration, memory and mood and in extreme cases, eating disorders and sadly suicide.
What we see and believe about our bodies is conditioned and influenced by; Society, media, family, friends, the culture we live in and our own personal experiences. However the biggest influence for most people today is social media and the overwhelming bombardment of often altered images that make most people feel inadequate.
We are being blindsided by the media, society and many companies that in order to be liked, loved and successful we need to look a certain way.
Scroll through social media, pick up a magazine, watch the latest series almost everyone has the so called ‘perfect’ body. These images leave most of us feeling like we are not good enough and need to change. The Wellness Industry profits from our insecurities, as we are more likely to buy into whatever product or service they maybe selling
BID affects so many people of all ages, race and gender. So many suffer silently.
There are many ways someone may suffer with BID and not by any means limited to the below, these are just an indication;
People who may suffer with BID
- Any negative thoughts about your body
- Disliking your body or parts of your body
- Wanting to change your body in some way
- Constantly thinking about your body and comparing yourself to others
- Thinking others always look better than you
- Obsessive exercise and/ or obsession with healthy eating
- Feeling guilty when not going to the gym or eating the 'right' foods
- Fixation with the scale (both for your body and food)
- Any kind of diet that is based on fear for our body image and not coming from a place of self-love. (including things like: paleo, keto, vega, vegetarian, atkins, weight watches etc) / Cutting out any macro foods (fats, carbs or protein)
It is okay to not 'love' your body in its totality, the issue is when most of our daily thoughts, feelings and behaviours are governed by our negative relationship with ourselves and our bodies and that affects our overall happiness, fulfilment, relationships and wellbeing
